Presidency Programme

Priorities of the Cyprus Presidency
The general priorities of the Cyprus Presidency stem from the 18-month programme of the Presidency Trio.

The Cyprus Presidency will build on the progress made by our Trio partners. Accordingly, the Presidency will strive to complete the legislative procedure for those statistical legal acts which will be well advanced and to achieve progress on newly initiated proposals. In order to achieve these goals in a well-balanced manner, the Cyprus Presidency will cooperate closely with the other Member States, its Trio partners, the European Parliament and the Commission.

Pending the progress to be achieved by the Danish Presidency, the Cyprus Presidency will seek to finalise the following legislative files:
  • Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on non-financial commercial real estate statistics.
  • Recommendation for a Council Regulation amending Regulation (EC) No 2533/98 concerning the collection of statistical information by the European Central Bank.
  • Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on European fisheries and aquaculture statistics and repealing Regulations (EC) No 1921/2006, (EC) No 762/2008, (EC) No 216/2009, (EC) No 217/2009 and (EC) No 218/2009.
The Cyprus Presidency is also prepared to initiate proceedings on other files that might be put forward by the Commission and to follow progress on files of interest to European statistics that are discussed in other Council Working Parties, such as the proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing the Single Market and Customs Programme for the period 2028-2034 (which includes the programming framework for European statistics).

Programme of the Presidency Trio
The Poland, Denmark and Cyprus Presidency Trio lead the EU Council Working Party on Statistics from 1 January 2025 to 30 June 2026. Poland started in January 2025 and Denmark took over in July 2025. Cyprus completes the term from January to June 2026.

The Presidency Trio will collaborate closely with the European Statistical System members and with all other partners. Our plans will build on the work of previous Presidencies and aim to advance pending legislative files, including the proposals for Regulations on fisheries and aquaculture statistics (EFAS) and commercial real estate indicators (CREI). The plan is flexible and will adjust to the progress in specific areas.

The Trio's goal is to address diverse user needs and use of new data sources and technologies to ensure high-quality, accurate, relevant and cost-effective European statistics following the European Statistics Code of Practice while being attentive to minimizing response burden.

The Trio partners also intend to contribute to coherent implementation of the revised 223/2009 regulation on European statistics which provides for the extension of provisions on statistical data sources being, at the same time, a ground for more efficient statistical production.

In addition, the Presidency Trio will strive to follow developments in negotiations on non-statistical files with elements related to statistics - with the aim to inform the statistical community and facilitate the elaboration of an adequate position, if necessary.
